Netflix confirmed on the 17th that Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin will star in the Korean drama The Trunk, based on a novel of the same name. The series will explore the unique concept of contract-based marriages through a mysterious matchmaking service.
The Trunk is set to begin filming in the second half of 2023 and will premiere on Netflix in 2024.
Gong Yoo plays Han Jeong-won, a music producer who’s deeply cynical about relationships. “Han Jeong-won is a music producer who believes that all marriages in the world are lies. He is a cynical and pessimistic man, scarred by his own marital experience.”
Opposite him, Seo Hyun-jin will play Noh In Ji, the deputy head of NM, the matchmaking agency at the center of the story. “Noh In Ji is a NM’s deputy head, a matchmaking company. She is a career oriented woman with no interest in marriage. She is also a bit of a loner and prefers to keep to herself.”
Even though her job is all about helping others find love, Noh In Ji herself doesn’t believe in marriage. She’s focused on work and stays out of relationships. On the other hand, Han Jeong-won’s belief that marriage is fake only grows stronger—until they cross paths.
The drama will be directed by Kim Gyu-tae, known for Our Blues and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. The script is penned by Park Eun-young, who previously worked on Hwarang and Drama Special Series Season 3: Like a Fairytale.
The plot follows the life of Noh In Ji, who arranges dreamlike, contract-based marriages for others through her company NM. Despite their very different views on love, both main characters—Han Jeong-won and Noh In Ji—are brought together by fate, challenging what they think they know about marriage.
