The K-pop market keeps seeing a surge of new idol groups, but unlike before, they’re no longer debuting with the same formula. From AI-based idols to virtual rookie groups, agencies are trying new concepts to stand out in the crowded industry.

The four-member virtual girl group IXIA is set to release its first single, “Hide & Find,” on the 27th. The lineup includes Cheongah, Haerang, Luhwa, and Jiya. Their concept focuses on a “worldview of four girls with special abilities to protect love.” According to their agency MegaMeta, the group’s goal is to share “messages of love and hope” while also targeting the global market with members fluent in multiple languages. IXIA is also the first virtual artist IP project created by Na Byung Joon, the former founder of Fantagio, who previously produced idols and actors like Cha Eunwoo, Seo Kang Joon, and Ha Jung Woo.

Meanwhile, iii (아이아이아이) is preparing for its official debut on the 29th with a new album. The group originally pre-debuted in 2023 with “Forbidden Midnight.” This year, their agency Big Ocean ENM announced that iii’s concept is “idols who came from AI to reality.” The members, who existed as virtual characters during pre-debut, have now transitioned into real-life performers. Their new lineup includes Taeri, Soobin, Eungi, Namkhing, Hana, and Huran. The agency has been actively uploading profile photos, videos, and cover songs on official social channels to build anticipation.

Another group gaining attention is I.MET.U, formed from the final lineup of “Time Turner.” The group name is derived from the letters “IME TU” in “TIME TURNER,” excluding the T and RNER. Consisting of Kelly, Yerin, Lea, and Cleo, I.MET.U promotes itself as “Cretaners.” The term combines “Creator” and “Entertainer,” reflecting their role as idols who also produce and manage their own content.
Two of the members, Kelly and Lia, already have strong influence with 7 million and 5 million social media followers, respectively. Unlike traditional groups, I.MET.U plans to focus on content creation and direct fan engagement. Their agency confirmed they’ll drop a pre-debut song in October and aim for an official debut in the first half of 2026.
