Actress Kim Sung-ryung Talks Hair Loss, Healthy Habits, and Spasmodic Dysphonia (neurological voice disorder.)
On the May 3rd episode of MBC’s ‘Omniscient Interfering View‘ (a.k.a. The Manager), actress Kim Sung-ryung gave viewers a peek into her everyday life — and opened up about some surprising health struggles.
Right after getting up, she stepped on the scale. Looking a little nervous, she said, “I even have to exhale completely.” The number flashed: 58kg. Song Eun-yi reacted, “(At that weight) oh my.” But Kim Sung-ryung kept things positive, saying, “I’m healthy. My wrinkles have disappeared since I gained weight.”
Watching from the studio, Hong Hyun-hee remembered, “She weighed herself first thing in the morning even five years ago,” and added with a smile, “I bet it’s not even that much.”
Then it was breakfast time. Kim Sung-ryung poured soy milk into a bowl, added some nuts and a bit of Manuka honey — her go-to healthy start to the day. Kim Seok-hoon asked, “Do you eat like that every morning?” and she nodded. Jeon Hyun-moo commented, “She’s really healthy. That’s how she maintains her skin.”
While eating, she pulled out a hair loss treatment and started taking care of her scalp. Jeon Hyun-moo asked, “Do you have hair loss?” and she shyly admitted, “It falls out a lot here.”
That wasn’t all — her health routine kept going. “I have to eat coconut oil,” she said. “I heard coconut oil is good for preventing dementia,” and even made sure to eat the oil that stuck to the plastic wrap.
Later, she headed to a voice training class. Her voice wasn’t coming out properly, and it caught the attention of those watching. That’s when her manager shared, “She has spasmodic dysphonia. It’s been quite a while.”

Jeon Hyun-moo wanted to know more, so she explained, “My autonomic nervous system is disrupted, causing my vocal cords to stiffen for no reason. I become tense even in non-tense situations.” She’s been living with the condition for nearly 20 years.
“I didn’t know for 10 years,” she said. “After that, I learned about vocal cord Botox treatments and have been getting them while acting. However, when I get Botox, my vocal cords should lengthen when I shout, but they don’t move. That’s why I can’t produce shouting sounds.”
Jeon Hyun-moo said, “You must have been so nervous while acting, worried that your voice wouldn’t come out.” She nodded, “That’s right. It’s been about 10 months since I last got Botox. I’m trying to overcome it,” she said, opening up about how tough — but ongoing — the journey has been.
